• Designed to spark students’ interest, stimulate their curiosity, raise questions for inquiry and elicit students’ existing beliefs about the topic
• Writing, drawing and talk provide an opportunity to assess students’ prior knowledge, including misconceptions
• Student’s existing ideas are taken account of when planning future learning experiences
